FAQs
You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Health Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) with or
without drug coverage during these times:
Initial Enrollment Period. When you first become eligible for Medicare. Your Initial Enrollment Period
begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, extends through the month you turn age 65, and ends 3
months after the month of that birthday.
Annual Enrollment Period. From October 15 – December 7 each year, you can join, switch, or drop a
plan. Your coverage will begin January 1 (as long as the plan gets your request by December 7).
Special Enrollment Period. Certain special circumstances, like moving or losing coverage, may qualify
you to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan outside of the Annual Enrollment Period. A licensed
insurance agent can help determine if you’re eligible.
NOTE: You must first have Medicare Parts A and B to be eligible for Part C.

A Medicare Advantage Plan is another way to get your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage. Medicare
Advantage Plans, sometimes called “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are offered by Medicare-approved private
companies that must follow rules set by Medicare. If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you’ll still
have Medicare but you’ll get most of your Part A and Part B coverage from your Medicare Advantage
Plan, not Original Medicare. These “bundled” plans include Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance), and may include Medicare drug coverage (Part D).
You can make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage when certain events happen in your life, like if you move or you lose other insurance coverage. These chances to make changes are called Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs). Rules about when you can make changes and the type of changes you can make are different for each SEP.
